One Day

One day

You are going to be alone

in your quiet house

sitting on your old worn couch

with stale cigarette smoke clouding your vision

and you’re going to close your eyes

and you’re going to regret

all the birthdays you missed

All the holidays that passed.

You’re going to regret not seeing me walk across that stage

head held high

And the promise of a bright future shining in my eyes.

You’re going to regret

losing the chance to link your arm with mine

while we walk nervously down the aisle

And bittersweet tears crowd in the corner of your eyes

because your daughter is promising herself to another.

You're going to regret missing everything that I am and

everything that I have become.

You may not regret it now, in this second

Because you’re too busy cutting ties and seething in your mistakes of immaturity

But I promise

that when you’re all alone in your old age

with wrinkles imprinted on your face telling stories of  years of anger you somehow managed to endure,

when everyone has finally had enough and has left you sitting on your old worn couch and smoke filled house,

I promise that you will feel a regret so deep that your soul will cry out, leaving unanswered cries echoing throughout the empty hallways, and your heart will be heavy with the knowledge that you will never

never

be able to unbreak my heart.

But that’s okay.

Because trust me when I say you’re the one missing out.

I am stronger and braver and more brilliant than I ever was.

And you’ll never

never

be able to witness that.

How sad for you.

wow, these are some strongly worded lines!

this is a very strong piece of writing and you speak some very true words, regret does and will creep up on us eventually and when it does it will probably feel like too much !

this really expressed something so deep ... its sad when we cut ties, and its quite often not the right thing to do
