That’s The Daddy in Me

Accidental Poet

That’s The Daddy in Me

Wife and child of my own

Not of my destiny

Guess I’ll have to do with out

The Daddy I’d wished to be

Looking back

I don’t recall thinking about it

But now I’m in my fifties

And every day I’m reminded of it

I see little girls and boys

Some with smiles, some with tears

Oh how I long to share their smiles

And ease their silent fears

To see their delighted joy

Upon seeing my face

To go everywhere with me

On the weekends to every place

To be known as Daddy

And looked up to with admiration

A hero every day

A sentimental fatherly relation

An example in self-worth

Pride in earning your keep

Courteous to others

Always polite to speak

Ladies before gentleman

To always lend a hand

Stand in another’s shoes

See through another’s eyes

and understand

Fairness to one and all

Honesty the best path to follow

And when in question

Be optimistic of tomorrow

From God

Our greatest gift is love

Don’t misuse it

For he’s the creator thereof

And although

A father I may not be

A hero in a child’s eyes

That’s the Daddy in me

The world sure missed out with you not being a father AP (if this is about you)....... sounds like all the right values are here....... sad but nice sentiments!

    • Accidental Poet

Thank you Lorna, yes it is about my own wishes of being a dad. But it wasn't meant to be.

      AP,
This is an absolutely beautiful poem...
And a great Daddy you would’ve made!
You are a hero in our eyes just for writing these beautiful poems for us to read! Every dad should read this poem and realize how blessed they are to be called Daddy!
I enjoyed reading this gem of a write of yours!
I remember the song from years ago! It’s an emotional one! I liked listening to it again!

Thank you Laura for reading and your compliments. I always smile when I see little kids laughing and happy at play.

        • Laura🌻

Did you ever consider adopting a child?

          • Accidental Poet

I suppose that would have been an option when I was younger, but I guess I was thinking settling down with a wife first. But that didn't happen until I was 51 and she had her own 3 teenage sons. Her sons and I didn't get along very well, and the marriage ended after 3 years. And now I'm 61 living with my 92 year old Dad taking care of him and house.

            • Laura🌻

Of course...ideally that’s what we want! To settle down first with a wife or a husband...and then children if we’re fortunate enough to have them! Unfortunately, it doesn’t always work out that way! Sorry your marriage didn’t work out. But the way I see it, it’s better to say goodbye amicably than to stay together miserably! Now you’re with your Dad ...taking care of him and the house...a big responsibility! He is blessed to have you! I know exactly what you’re talking about! I didn’t have the heart to put my mom...who’s 95 years old...in a senior home. Her wish is to die in her own home! My life as I knew it is on hold for now! As long as she’s happy, I’m fine with that.

A responsible and respectable Daughter you are Laura. My Dad keeps saying he's ready to go, and even wants to go. He hates what's going on the world these days. Politics, two wackos ready to push a button to wipe out the other, violence on the TV in movies and the daily news. Guns always in the news where lunatics are shooting innocent people in schools and malls. Where does it end?

                • Laura🌻

An excellent question my friend! I wish we had the answer!

Your Dad is spot on about the state this world is in these days!

My Mom is also ready to go! I try to keep her spirits up. At times, it’s very hard as you can well relate to...I’m sure!

We’ll do the best we can!

                  • Accidental Poet

                    Yes we will Laura.

I get stuck on that one - don't know where they fitted in. They died out somehow I suppose.

Very good emotive write, such a shame that you were not a Dad.

                            • Accidental Poet

Yes, I had wanted to be. But when I think about the state of the world these days Andy I have second thoughts. I have to wonder of what kind of world the children of this generation will inherit. And certain world leaders have me very scared of what happens in the next 4 or 5 years. But thanks for reading and your comments.

                            • MARY Swillum

The only thing I can say about this poem is it gave me goosebumps. So much emotion in what being a Daddy means to you. Great poem!!
