The tale of Miss Adeline Carr or Opportunity lost

David.A-J

We loved and we worshipped Miss Adeline Carr,
She shone in our lives like the bright morning star,
She was the beauty we viewed from afar
and bewitched all of those who’d behold her.

She’s the sweet girl next door, the essence of taste,
With soft curving hips and the slenderest waist.
And red luscious lips in beautiful face.
Oh my arms ache to softly enfold her

She's a vision that floats in the sweetest of dreams
The poets have written about her in reams
Her laughter has music like cool mountain streams
And her tresses flow over her shoulders

She’s not just a beauty, sweet Adeline Carr
She’s a lady, a lawyer; she’s called to the bar
She worked in the Law Firm of her dear Papa
As he tried to paternally mould her.

The tall handsome man that wooed sweet Adeline
Thought of her highly, most of the time,
And if I’d moved swiftly she could have been mine.
Oh I wish I’d been stronger or bolder.

This gorgeous, beloved subject of my dreams
was a partner of princes, and envied by Queens,
but now I perceive all is not as it seems
and my feelings begin to grow colder.

For the goddess we know as a beautiful sight
is Lina the Diva who parties all night,
in her deep plunging necklines and black leather tights
she succumbs to the lies they have told her.

She was out on the town with a gangster called Dave,
She’s been taking the pills, they’re off on a rave,
He wants to be master, she needs to be slave.
And he was the villain that sold her.

I took my worst fears to the police in our town,
I answered their questions, they wrote it all down.
But they never looked, and she’s never been found
She’s a ‘stat’ in missing girls Folder.

I hear that our ‘Lina’s been seen in the clubs
and the bars and the tap rooms in lesser known pubs
and spends Sunday night giving alcohol rubs
To men who are considerably older.

There’s moral to take from this sad tale of woe;
When you’re at rock bottom, and there’s nowhere to go,
life can be hard, and you just need to know
That if your Daddy’s a silk, don’t act like a ho.
If she’d just listened to what Mama had told her Poor Lina ….

  • Comment from author about the poem: This is not meant to be philippic on perfidy but rather a lament on my own pusillanimous demeanour. I must also make the ubiquitous disclaimer that "No person, living or dead is represented in this writing, it is all entirely fictitious.
