Stars

Skies bright with stars twinkling on and showering me with their white light, they shelter me.

I could not see in such darkness without their guidance, their round bursts of burning energy surrounding me.

The moon winks and waves at me, and I see the man in its craters peeking at me like an angel peering down from the clouds of some kind of heaven.

Moths flutter about and catch in the spider web above my head, squirming desperately to free themselves before the spider makes them prey.

A praying mantis stares at me while it lazily walks along the splintering wood of my deck. It’s taking me in, it’s reading my thoughts.

The sky explodes around me, crashes down upon me, and I cannot duck and cover so I allow it to envelope my body and invade my soul.

I am filled with the spring night’s air, it ruffles through my hair as I breathe in the sweetness of the pollen it blows swiftly through its wind.

I reach out and grasp a star and hold it in the palm of my hand, but, like sand, it slips out through the cracks of my fisted fingers.

I am no one but a shadow in the dark, in the deep dark. Thud, thud, thud goes the pounding of my heart. I forgot, before I felt that thud, that I was still alive.
