Blessed Virgin Mary - Mother of the Church

Gary Edward Geraci

If God desires it...

If God designs it...

If God delights in it...

If God delivers his

Son through the womb of the

Most Blessed Virgin Mary,

Then God deigns it...and so

The Church decrees it.

Even so, many a God-fearing

Human heart; disciples;

Still, a decree they dispute.

As if God could not have

Desired, designed, delighted, delivered,

And deigned the Mother of God; the Mother of the Church!

  • Comment from author about the poem: Pope Francis has made the devotion to the Virgin Mary a new fixed celebration in the Roman Catholic calendar. The Vatican published a decree Saturday in which Francis declared that the Mary "Mother of the Church" feast would be celebrated on the Monday following Pentecost. This year, it falls on May 21. A fine write as a poem Gary. I don't concern myself too much with 'denominations' but I tend to the Protestant side. We respect Mary but don't pray to her nor do similar things.
    Such devotions are included in some 'higher' Protestant churches, maybe tacked on at the end - as a epilogue?!
    Seems farcical - the priest dashes to the little shrine before the last hymn finishes, then they gabble a few words to Mary!

      Interesting to hear your observations Orchidee. Catholics are advised to “...let them rightly illustrate the duties and privileges of the Blessed Virgin which always look to Christ, the source of all truth, sanctity, and piety. Let them assiduously keep away from whatever, either by word or deed, could lead separated brethren or any other into error regarding the true doctrine of the Church.” #67, Lumen Gentium
