The Sum of Us

Stan Rodriguez

Children in their savagery sing out the night

humping tunes

no one can understand but them.

Hemispheres—

between the rising and falling of their legs

hide a wonder of populations yet unborn.

Come true…aim straight

they squeal like pigs in heat

out in the open for the world to see.

Arrows pointing from their groins

shooting exotic moves that everyone can use.

For we are all born of good and family.

Straights and queers

and those that fly in between

enjoying both.

Flawlessly we all taken center stage

illegitimate or not

blonds, brunettes or fiery reds

curly, straight or cornrowed—

the smiles are there

and the desire to run

pacing through the night

humping as if there’s little else to do.

Yet their desires demand release in a wonderment

that thrills the soul and leaves them floundering

in euphoria.
