A Rottweiler called for a meeting,
All the dogs in Heaven were there.
He wanted to announce a newcomer,
And to tell everyone to prepare.
"Gather 'round," he said to the crowd."
"I have something important to say."
"A long time ago, when I first arrived,"
"I was told I should wait for this day."
Legend has it there'd be a great dog,
That he'd come from earth down below.
He'd stay with us to eternity,
And the leadership crown we'd bestow.
All the dogs sat and listened in silence,
Hearts raced with exciting suspense.
Then the Rottweiler relayed the story,
While speaking with true reverence.
I had a dream about twelve years ago,
That this dog was now on his way.
He'd be our leader this side of the bridge,
And cross us all on a Spring clear day.
Each Spring I'd sit by the Bridge,
Not knowing the day he'd appear all regal.
Get out his crown and a cloud for his nap,
For you will soon meet the dog they call Diesel
As the dogs sat 'round listening in awe,
A sound from below reached their ears.
Each knew the sound they had all heard before,
It was that of a family in tears.
As they waited in sombering silence,
The Rottweiler whispered "He's here"
The puppies all ran to the edge of the Bridge,
To see the one they had learned to revere.
Then a spot in the distance got larger,
The Great dog was gaiting with ease.
Diesel crossed the bridge with his head held high,
And all the dogs just fell to their knees.
Diesel now waits at the bridge,
Where the dogs have set up his throne.
When all his friends go to Heaven someday,
He'll be there to welcome them home.
RIP Diesel xxx

- Comment from author about the poem: When I lost my dog Diesel, I was overcome by emotion and grief and sat and reflected on the times we had over the years. Its strange to say but the love a dog gives you is unconditional. He was always the first to greet me when I walked in from work, he was the last to come up to me before we all went to bed. I just sat back when I wrote this poem and put all my grief and emotions into a poem and still to this day it brings a tear to my eye whenever I read it back to myself.

A fine write, and a fine gentle giant there shaking hands, Darren.

Such a heartfelt and beautifully written poem, thanks for sharing. 😘😘
Thank you for your kind words, they mean so much. 😘😘
We used to have a Rott named Annie. She was the sweetest, most loyal, smart, protective, laid back baby girl you could ever wish for. She died from cancer in her legs when she was thirteen. That was years ago and we still miss her. Great emotive write. Thank you for sharing this.
For those who have never owned a Rottweiler will never understand the loyalty this breed of dog shows. They are the most loyal and loving dog you could ever own. My family always felt safe when I was not around as Diesel, and Tank before him, made sure they were never approached by any unwanted strangers. The best breed of dog I have ever owned.
I agree completely although we did have a black lab (the only lab on earth that was afraid of water! 🙂 ) he was super sweet too. But my favorite breed is the Rottweiler. She was super sweet, loyal and protective. She made me a believer.
Your poem touches the heart and many readers can relate to the feeling of loss when a pet dies but dogs are so much part of a household and we miss them so when they have to go - - thanks Darren for sharing those memories with us.
Your words are so true and the love your dog shows is unconditional. The feeling of loss is so deep you sometimes struggle to come to terms with it. Only time can ease the feeling but never does it go away. Such kind words, thank you.
