Rewired

edwinknox

You were different

You didn’t break me

Like everyone else did

I cried over you

But not for the usual reasons

It’s funny how that works

You didn’t break my heart

Or leave it beat to a pulp

As a matter of fact

My heart is intact

Because you aimed for my brain

You took your gentle hands

And delved deep into my head

Armed with nothing but your words

You took me apart

Piece by piece

And then

You put me back together

But something was different

You rewired me

Because now

I am numb

There is no more sadness

Or remorse

Or pain

Or guilt

All that remains

Is nothingness

You hollowed me out

And I didn’t even notice
