'You know what they say...'
‘They say’ an apple a day keeps the doctor away.
‘They say’ in time, everything will be okay.
‘They say’ good things come, to people that wait,
‘They say’ the happiest of people, pull the biggest of weight.
‘They say’ the best things come, to good people.
‘They say’ Bad people live, in a world full of evil.
‘They say’ good fortune comes, to those with itchy feet
‘They say’ You are what you eat.
‘They say’ you don’t know what you’ve got, until it is gone.
‘They say’ The road to success, is hard and long.
‘They say' everything happens, for a reason.
‘They say’ new beginnings happen, each and every season.
‘They say’ treat people how you want to be treated.
‘They say’ use time wisely, it wont be repeated.
‘They say...'
Say so much, yet who is ‘they’?
‘They’ guide our conversations each and every day.
‘They’ challenge us and question our each and every thought,
'They' give us advice, remind us what we’re taught.
‘They say’ Is confusing because we use what they say a lot...
But who was ‘ They’? Inspiration who’s names we forgot?
Is ‘ They’ an almighty force that lives in the skies?
Or could ‘They’ be someone who tragically died?
Is ‘They’ a cave man, An Astronaut? or a millionaire?
Is ‘They’ a poet an artist or a man with long hair?
The truth could be that ‘they’ is a myth or a lie.
But in our conversation the term‘ They say’ Will never die.
We just don’t know them, or who or what or where.
So we pass by ‘they's’ words of wisdom, not a single care.
Then we put ‘them’ in the category of what ‘ They’ said
And every day obliviously, we say ’they say’ instead.

- Comment from author about the poem: I'm really hoping this poem is understood in the way my brain understands, it even though I'm not too sure if MY crazy brain even fully understands it haha. We so passively make comments to others using the term, 'Well, you know what they say....' In this poem I challenged that term and explored the question -Who is 'they'. I hope it makes sense, I've tried something a little bit different. Please leave a comment, I'd love to hear what people think! Peace and Love ~E

Some of these sayings are coated with truth and we do well to take heed - - my favourite lines have to be found in your finalé - as follows
- "They say’ treat people how you want to be treated.
‘They say’ use time wisely, it wont be repeated. "
Well written and a very inspiring read.

Great concept
We all use conventional wisdom every day
But we never know the source of it
I love all the quotes from they and how you made them ryhme
Really Clever stuff
Thank you very much, I'm glad you understood the poems story and thank you for the feedback! ~ E
I suppose 'they' means the general opinion, or the majority view.
We speak of 'them', as you say.
When someone else speaks of 'them', that may include us ourselves!
I will stop before getting into big tangle! lol.
But 'they' say - a fine poem E.
It can get confusing but you are so right haha, they can very well be us!
Thank you ~ E
Just brilliant and I must say I understand better now as I always get itchy feet, my hair is so long people like to call me Jesus but now I see I'm just becoming a they.
Hahahah!! This comment made me laugh out loud! you may be an almighty force from the skies Dan. I'm glad you enjoyed it. ~ E
Your words be true, and very few would think to challenge the saying of "they said," so good on you. Like A.C Doomcraft said, great concept to write about. Keep your mind open, and you'll continue to construct such miraculous poems.
Thank you so much, I'm glad you enjoyed it. I'm keen to explore new concepts and let my creative mind flow! Thanks again. ~ E
SO TRUE!! I always want to know who said what. I'll ask someone that says that, "who said that, who is they?" Btw, an apple a day will keep the doctor away..... If your aim is good enough!! 🙂 🙂 Some of these I agree with so I guess I'm part of those 'they'. Great write, well done!
Please do ask people and tell me what their reply is I'm interested to know Haha!
haha, I agree with most of them also, thanks for your feedback! put a smile on my face. ~ E
Usually "they" will say 'you know, people' . They never have particular people in mind that they've heard stuff from. I repeat stuff from grandparents, parents, or someone I can trust their opinion but I always want to know where the information is coming from. You should see some of the looks I've gotten when I've asked though. Too funny! 🙂 🙂
THEY all knew it was brilliant. So did I
Thank you very much.~ E
YOUR VERY WELL WRITTEN POEM IS EASILY UNDERSTOOD AND EXTREMELY THOUGHT PROVOKING.IN THE MORNING I AM GOING TO PONDER THIS A WHILE,PROBABLY STILL WON'T UNDERSTAND BUT LIKE,THEY SAY ,THE EARLY BIRD GETS THE WORM,SO IM GOING TO TRY IT OUT,MAYBE MY BRAIN WILL ACTUALLY WORK RIGHT.
I'm glad you enjoyed it haha, thanks for the feedback and good lick with your pondering hahaha! ~E
