Ode to a Silver Angel

Jo March

I do not know who opened the window

Or who had let you fly away at dawn

I just remember that I saw your shadow

Reflected on the other side of the lawn

I could not ask you where you were flying

Or what dreams you saw on a silver cloud

I could only look at the sky in wonder

And watch the sun beams multiplying

I did not know your name or speak out loud

But stood in silence as if shocked by thunder

Since then, I have wandered like a stranger

I have confused reality with dream

I was incapable of feeling anger

And longed to blend with the power supreme

I did not know what paradise island

You had flown to on your sunlit trail

Or to what midnight stars you had prayed

Unseen in the sunset bliss of the highlands

I could not quite see your features frail

Or hear the golden harp you must have played

I do not know where you will travel now

What tragic stories you are meant to hear

Where you intend to play your harp or how

There where people are still enslaved by fear

Or in the midst of glowing happy faces

That smile and love and bless the newborn day

You did not tell me if you will return

Yet I promise not to erase the traces

Left by your winglike feet in their delay

And will wait till you come back from your sojourn

Your golden wings have glistened in the sunlight

Your slender hands have touched the windowsill

Your sky-blue eyes have smiled at my delight

When I saw your shadow in the morning chill

I do not know your name or how you came here

So let me call you an angel of my dream

An angel who sings about those who cry

And wipes the traces of their bitter tears

Who in his glowing hands catches a sunbeam

Who helps those who stumble and those who try

You have chased away my fears and worries

You have helped my heart remember how to sing

I walked down streets and heard so many stories

About those who lose and those who win

Your jingling laughter flung my heart wide open

Your lovely song has taught my ears to hear

I learned to love the sunshine and the rain

I understood why human hearts are broken

Why people are too often gripped by fear

And how they long to free themselves from pain

You shimmered with the promise of tomorrow

You have helped my winged heart sing like a lark

You have erased traces of human sorrow

On faces and made hearts glow in the dark

I saw people’s eyes shine with happiness

Then I heard them remember brighter days

I understood what my heart prayed and searched for

After you had set me free from loneliness

And when my soul soared in the sun’s golden rays

I thrilled to hear your song’s forgotten lore

I know not what is your lonely mission

Or what song you hummed perched on the window

I simply feel that no earthly position

Can teach the heart to bask in starlight glow

I will never forget your heavenly smile

And the dreams you saw on clouds of silver

While my soul shines with gratitude, I know

That I have to let you fly your sunlit mile

And wait for your return to fields of clover

When once again I could glimpse your wings of snow
