Team Player
You must be willing to bunt
If you want to make this team
It’s the selfless ones we want
And sacrifice we need
You’ll have to take a pitch
When at bat now and then
And when the ump calls ‘ball’
You’ll take a pitch again
You’ll have to steal a base
When your coach thinks you can
But whenever you’re tagged out
You’ll have to face the fans
You’ll have to take a walk
When the pitcher won’t throw to you
With the intentional walk
A potential run scored too
With opponents we shake hands
When the game is just over
With good sportsmanship
Whether young or much older

I didn't understand much of this as being from the UK I do not follow baseball but I thoroughly agree with the last stanza, in all games you must do your best to win but that shake of the hands and sportsmanship is the only way to go.
This reminded me of a poem I wrote a long time ago, I will put it on the site today.
I can see where this poem would confuse someone that has never really played baseball. Like you, i think good sportsmanship is the important thing.
A fine write w c. We have UK things like polo (tally ho!) or croquet for snobs. lol.
Thanks, orchidee. I know that this poem would not make much sense for those that haven't played baseball.
We're too busy waffling, and having tea and cucumber sandwiches - very English! lol.
why not?
its just a game.
Point well taken, onepauly.
