Tune: Woodlands
('Tell out my soul')
********
O swans of peace, will your peace be preserved?
Will man take thought, and your home be preserved?
And too you geese, you ducks, and birds many
Here you abide, tranquil riverside, see
Though man would seek more roads, and here to build
Encroaching on bridleway, tree, and field
O pray a concrete jungle not o'ertake
But green spaces retained for nature's sake
Give guidance, wisdom, that man not consume
Environment, but for creature make room
So life preserved, God's natural beauties seen
And keeping meadows, pleasant pastures green
Grant we may many happy hours enjoy
By riverside, may man it not destroy
Here peace and calm, to God a step nearer
O Lord come to our help and not defer

- Comment from author about the poem: A hymn-poem in 10.10.10.10. metre. This is ongoing. Some land come under part of two Local Authorities. One has seen sense (I feel) and abandoned building plans. The other one has re-submitted plans for a meeting later this month. There are action groups, petitions, etc opposed to this. I wondered which side I was on. Then I saw a swan having a wash(!), among other birds, and was inspired to write this there and then. What 'side' are you on, even apart from the religious/spiritual aspect?
