A Certain Distance
The space maintained
Between you and me
In effect
That which keeps us close
But so very far apart
Is measured by
A mere fraction of a moment
That only exists
Between one heartbeat and the next
Essentially
Between life and death itself
Suspended
Within a solitary fragment
A single breath
And in the scent and taste
You left me savouring
Long after our first embrace

Those moments can be so near yet so far apart at the same time.
