The strongest come in small packages

Heather Harrisson

Seeds can grow to mighty oaks,
Living on for years.
They start so small then up they go,
Climbing without fears.

A bee will lay down its own life,
To protect its hive.
Ripping out its own insides,
To help the others survive.

A tiny ant can carry leaves,
Up to twenty times its weight.
Building burrows stretching 80 metres,
Taking years to create.

The bright, colourful humming bird,
Tranfix the gaze of all.
Beat wings 90 times a second
Hovering, they never fall.

The girl, she stands at 3 foot nothing,
Half the size of the rest.
Running down the basketball court,
Doing her very best.

She scores a basket, then one more,
She misses one or two.
The taller boys all stare in awe,
Could this all be true?

She practised from the age of four,
Her older sisters trained her.
Every week she honed her skills,
So as to earn their favour.

No one really payed her
Much attention when they met.
Thinking she would be no good,
Too cute, a little pet.

But then she made her way;
Pink Disney shirt and shorts,
Towards the basket at one end,
Holding the ball she caught.

A couple whispers here and there,
No one had the heart to stop her.
Thinking she would certainly fail,
"Oh how cute!" They'd snicker.

She levelled her arm and threw it up,
Jumping as she did.
Perfect aim, it fell straight through,
"Don't call me cute!" She chided.

And by the time the game had finished,
She scored more than anyone else.
Several pat her on the back;
The hardest hearts can melt.

So no matter your abilities,
Or knowledge, even size,
Anyone can become strong,
If you really try.

"If you judge a fish on its ability to climb a tree, it will live its whole life believing that it is stupid." - Albert Einstein
    I enjoyed the read.

Oh wow, I'd forgotten that quote, and what a great one it is! Thanks for the comment!

Very good positive write. In life you must always try in spite of what others may think.
