White Horse and Griffin

The Retired Bloke

Sleeping with history

Among whispering walls

Slanted windows

Old wooden doors

A creaking stair

A wall brick bare

Ghosts of the past

Their futures cast

Explorers plotted

James Cook, William Scoresby

The heritage thickens

The writer Charles Dickens

Candlelight, log fires

Heightening the senses

Awakening desires

Eyes closed imagining

Those who’ve travelled

Through these ancient vestibules

Whose lives unravelled

Wise men and occasional fools

Sleeping with history

Endless legends magical mystery.

  • Comment from author about the poem: This week we had a pre-Christmas break at the ancient Whitby coaching inn, The White Horse and Griffin. Captain Cook and Charles Dickens are amongst those who have come through its doors since opening in the early 18th century.

Super write, if only those walls could speak what wonderful tales they would have to offer.
