Tune: Was Lebet, Was Schwebet
('O worship the Lord in the beauty of holiness')
Matthew 2 v.1-8 & v.12
The first verse is repeated at the end (as in original hymn).
***********
Now when Jesus was born
In Bethlehem, joyful morn
In land of Judea
Light did appear
In days of King Herod
Was born there the Son of God
Wise men came from the east
[To] Salvation's feast
They came to Jerusalem
Enquired, is it Bethlehem?
Where Christ-child's birth-place is
Glorious this
Yes, said priests and prophets
And people, with no regrets
There shall you Him true find
Gift unto mankind
For prophecy of old
In Micah's day was foretold
You, Bethlehem, though small
Land of Judah, all
Shall see that from of you
One comes to rule, do Him view
A Governor, Ruler
Hearts to Him stir
He shall rule His people
Israel, Sovereign o'er all
So wise men sent to find
Young child, fair, kind
Herod of pretence said
He worships Christ, humble stead
God warned wise men in dream
All [was] as not seem[ed]
Now when Jesus was born
In Bethlehem, joyful morn
In land of Judea
Light did appear
In days of King Herod
Was born there the Son of God
Wise men came from the east
[To] Salvation's feast
