Who I Am To You

Ariel Perez

I am the girl who sits by you

Watching you as you watch her

Analyzing her with every nerve in your body

But you don't recognize me

You don't recognize me when she is around

Your laughs, your smiles, you give them to her

As courtesy or out of kindness but why am I bothered?

As you call my name out of anger or annoyance

You called hers out of pure playfulness

Her name slipping off your tongue

Just like when you kiss me

Out of lust, not love

I was never sure

I still am not sure

When you are not with me you begin to wander

Into the distance i see you with her

While i hold you’re backpack when im sad

You never question my feelings

You never seemed to care

You don’t look at me but your eyes seemed to wander

Always towards hers

I understand, I do or at least I try

You’ve never dated a girl like me

I’m the girl you wish to hide.

  • Comment from author about the poem: At the beginning I seem like I just wanted my crush to notice me, but you begin to realize I am his girlfriend. I am a unnoticed love when she comes around, hiding my sadness so I don't hurt his feelings. I hide in the background scared of being replaced. Complicated, its always complicated. I am the girl who you never called by name.
