Valley on the Hill.

Goldfinch60

So often we go there,

Go to the Garden Centre,

All the way UP the hill.

Walk around the shops,

Go in for coffee,

Write these words.

So often we are UP there,

UP ABOVE the river,

UP to that place,

That place they have renamed,

UP to that place now called,

The Valley.

A fine write Gold. They went UP to the Jerusalem Temple. I know a cathedral where in one approach we have to go DOWN a steep hill to get to it, as a river is nearby.

Some strange occurrences we have to deal with.

GOOD MORNING UNCLE ANDY (Its 10:30pm here !) Love TCHAIKOVSKY alwys wakes me up ! I love your reposts with ORCHII : I always start humming "Mad Dogs & Englishmen ....... !" English humour always falls flat on Americans & the Spanish ! My PAPA never gets my revolving door joke about getting "Too many Basques in one Exit" You poem about the ENGLISH use of UP & DOWN can be Social as well as situational. You speak of "Going DOWN to the Pub" which may be UP a Hill so you can roll home ! But always going UP to Church which may be DOWN in the Valley. Perhaps conditioned by the hypothetical geographical positions of HEAVEN & HELL. It is interesting in NZ they still speak of going UP to Heaven even though they would be going in the opposite direction of the UK and simlarly DOWN to Hell ! In ESSEX they always go UP T' TOWN irrespective of the gradient : also its always Im commin' DOWN (or ROUND) t' YOURS tomorow !
Blessings & Love to you BOTH :
            ANGELA 🧡🧡🧡🧡🧡

Yes the English colloquialisms can be strange to other cultures but in this case renaming a Garden Centre that is up above a river The Valley seemed very perverse to many people in our town.

English language has become Englitch hasn't it. And a garden centre has become, well you tell me, have you visited Webbs of Wychbold recently? It might be worth a day out but be warned, it's more like a shopping mall than the friendly greenhouses it once was.

                  • Goldfinch60

Yes I have been to Webbs, it took us two days to find our way out!

The older, the longer the "UP" becomes. Confusing choice of name, "The Valley" if you must go "Up," Maybe they should have called it "The Downs." Could someone please install an escalator. They should give free coffee just for getting there. Enuf said, enjoyed the poem. Stay well. - Phil A.

Thank you for your fine reply Phil, it confused us in the town when they renamed it The Valley especially as it looks down onto the river.
