WHY DONT PLASTICS DECOMPOSE? BRIAN ~ A DODECET

ANGELA & BRIAN

OCEAN ~ PLASTIC POLLUTION ~ A POINT OF NO RETURN ?

WHY aren't  all PLASTICS biodegradable ?

WELL ! The simple answer is because they

Are not Natural Products ~ but Synthetic !

Polymers like CELLULOSE ~ which we use

As Paper - Cardboard - Wood is a Natural Product

So there are environmental MICROBES

Which can decompose them ! WOOL is also

A Natural Product ~ NYLON 66 is

A Synthetic WOOL substitute ~ but not

Biodegradable !  POLYTHENE is a .......

Hydrocarbon ~ long chains of  - CH2 -

Units and is not biodegradable !

POLYSTYRENE ~ POLYPROPYLENE ~ PERSPEX

PVC ~ All have structures similar

To POLYTHENE ~ therefore they are also

Non-biodegradable !  In Oceans .......

Plastics do NOT decompose ~ they become

MICRO-PLASTICS which kill  FISH and enter

The Food Chain !   So we should replace PLASTICS

Where possible ~ with PAPER & CARDBOARD !

Thanks for visiting ~ comments welcome ~ Love Brian 🧡🧡🧡

This POEM is presented as a Blank Verse Dodecet ~ 20 lines

mainly in Iambic Pentameter ~ 10 syllables per line ~ OK

Some of you may be able to remember the days before most

PLASTICS (1900 to 1945) I was born in 1983 ~ Plastic Age !

Fine write and by coincidence puts me in mind of a shorty I have just written as a play on the word 'decompose':

    Unwrite the notes
    Of tunes once heard
    No more promote
    The songs now blurred
    As notes erode
    In decompose

TOUCHE UNCLE MIKE ~ There is tendancy in any systen for the ENTROPY (dissorder) to increase with time ~ buildings ~ cars ~ gradens etc "Change & Decay in all around I see ............. ! Natures Natural Cycles are programmed to decompose & recycle the chemical elements. There are organisms called DECOMPOSERS to do this. They (as we know) can cope with natural materials such as wood ~ cardboard ~ paper ~ natural fibres etc. Most of the synthetic polymers (polythene) etc are like glass (polysilicate) and remain non-biodegradable ! What was a great blessing is now seen as a curse ! My Grandparents remembered camping with CANVAS BUCKETS and METAL PLATES & MUGS before the 1950's and ALUMINIUM water bottles on their bikes which corroded etc ! A fine write and explanation B&A. Meanwhile - that's why I'm so old. I'm a plastic, but living, dinosaur! Well, we get called dinosaurs these days if we won't use e-mail, or simple techy things even.

Thanks UNCLE STEVE ~ Pleased you enjoyed it. You will remember the pre-Plastic & pre-Synthetic Fibre days ~ How on Earth did you survive ? Blessings & Love through Poetry ~ BRIAN & ANGELA 🧡🧡🧡🧡

Ohh modern-day dinosaurs - people refusing any sort of techy stuff. 'Ooh, I can't be messing about with pressing these buttons, etc'.... they say! And 'Will the computer make the tea too?'

          • ANGELA & BRIAN

Ahhhhh UNCLE STEVE ~ You may remember TEASMAIDS (Ive seen them in Folk Museums) I am told People installed them in their bedrooms ~ set them up the night before ~ Leaf Tea ~ silver strainer ~ milk & real sugar (SUCROSE) & a digestive ! Woken up by Alarm ~ prees the button & hey presto tea (or coffee) without a trip to the cold scullary ! it was in essence a COMPUTER that made Tea (on everyones wedding list !)
            Blessings through hightech !

Doh! We wanted the photocopier to make tea at work. But the manageress couldn't even wait for it to warm up, and was about to kick it. I had to say nice things to it, or it would be temperamental. They know, these machines. A bit anthropomorphic there - attributing human characteristics to non-living or non-human things. But only a 5 syllable word used - anthro-wotsit. Ahh bless! lol.

A very informative write! I've not attempted a blank verse dodecet before so thank you for that also!

              • ANGELA & BRIAN

Thanks JAYNE pleased you appreciated the explanations ! I get my students to bury (in damp soil) paper & cardboard and a variety of synthetic plastics and dig them upa year later ! We find the natural polymers have dedocmposed while the Polythene etc is still intact !
I like dodecets (20) because for a subject like this a Sonnet (14) is too short ! They can Rhyme or be Free Verse (no meter) with Bank Verse each line should (if possible) have the same number of syllables. This gives the Poem structure & flow for recitation ~ OK Thanks for your encouraging comment !

An outcry which should be read at all outlets and drummed into every mind - - - more strength to your elbow with this posting my friend.
