Lost tickets to ride

Poetic Dan

Memories of finding you here
Bunking school hiding like a deer
Avoiding anyone I didn't know
Finding you with a smokey Jo

Sharing it and making me feel sick
Stumbling white till I fell asleep
Little would I know in a few weeks
You'd die in car crash, joyrider kicks

I found a coin that was heads up
Letting me know to never stop
Keep my tail pointing in the past
Looking back with gentler hearts

Living fast a few friends chose
Some to tortured from in thoughts
Others it was maybe their time
Moments together forever a rhyme

My lost friends I leave an open page
Written from within yours names R.I.P
Ryan, Danny, Paul Jr, Darren, Gareth, Ritta and Donna
You've all even rhymed leaving behind in order
I am honoured to keep sharing memories of ya!

Live long or live short
Be rich or be poor
Still have to be glad
Of riding here at all

  • Comment from author about the poem: Last Friday while waiting to pick the kids up from my home town, I took the dog for a walk finding an old park in the woods still looking the same as it did 24 years ago. Thinking of a time when I first lost a friend, I was shocked to find a golden nugget (one pound coin) under a tree. For the past few years I've flipped a nugget (£1) when struggling to know what to do, heads meaning go straight on, tails choose another direction. It's the reason I'm on the path I am, so I'll keep doing what I am!

    Very moving piece.

"I found a coin that was heads up

I think that that is great way to look at life.
    Well done.

      FRIENDSHIP,
      MEMORIES,
      DIRECTION,
      PAST BEHIND,
      FUTURE AHEAD
      MEMORIES
      FRIENDSHIPS

      Tragically poignant

Was that the coin you flipped 24 years ago and lost it, then found it again?!

        • Poetic Dan

Not unless I knew they would change them 😉

Pain and loss are teachers. They teach us that things we love are not permanent, and that we need to be aware of what it's like to love and lose. You have chosen to accept this, and become a better person from it. Truly a wonder. Thank you for the write and share, it's a lovely piece of dedicated resolution decided by your nature and the flip of a coin. You're doing just fine, methinks.
            Best regards, Dan.
