Nurse

Jeffrey Roy

Stuudied so hard for a nursing career

Sometimes knowledge doesn't replace fear

The job of a 12 hour shift Nurse

At times feels more like a curse

Telling loved ones goodbye leaving home for the nite

The man in room 22 fragile and cold, needing a warm blanket and to hear him out

The lady in 13 has cancer and is slowly dying

Yet her hair is gone and she feels bad, she still grasps hope

Not ready to give in to her untimely  fate

The call lights ring off the hook all nite long

The sick needing pain relief and care through the storm

Compassion and genuinity is all it takes

Lending a shoulder to cry and a listening ear

Encouragement following fast behind the fear

I met many student nurses in my career especially as a guest lecturer at University and can vouch for their wonderful dedication - this superb poem sums up the raw edge of nursing and the undoubted satisfaction their career brings (but only through their dedication).
