Hungry Corner

Neville

Hungry Corner

Welcome to Hungry Corner

Where it is not unusual

For pot bellied children

To cry themselves to sleep

Dreaming of sun dried fish and rice

Welcome to Lonely Corner

Where no one ever smiles

Welcome to Hungry Corner

Where old men fill

Their empty bowls with culture

Together with their collective saliva

They drool and dream of a yesterday long gone

Welcome to Hungry Corner

Where the impossible is possible

And everything will inevitably turn out wrong

    A thoughtful write Neville.
Meanwhile - what's going on? You was thirsty, now you is hungry?! heehee.

    • Neville

Thank you for visiting these words.. the inspiration for Hungry Corner stems from a time when I used to hand my daily bowl of boiled rice out to those who were starving as I made my way along the Senne Gambia Highway toward Kerr Serrin and the Tanka Tanka Hospital... N

I understand N. Terrible still in this day and age.
It's a crazy comment I've added from my (non-existent) book 'Meanwhile - 1,001 notes of nuttiness'.

        • Neville

I will let you off then..... I hope that is not your way of telling me you have another 1,000 to post..

          • orchidee

Erm, yes, Book 2 nearly ready! lol.

          • Fay Slimm.

A strange and sad place rises from your poignant description today Nev - - named and shamed these conditions where yesterday means more than tomorrow and no energy to sway away from a perceived culture. The read leaves food for much thought on how to force change.......... x

            • Neville

Thank you for considering these words Fay... Yes.. much change is indeed needed but I fear even now in the 21st Century, it will take a very long time... I am seriously thinking of returning to Africa later this year and trying to do my bit again..... N

              • Fay Slimm.

Your kind heart shows through these thoughts for the future Nev. Time has it own pace and slow the wheels turn toward others less fortunate even in this favoured land. - - May blessings go with you should you be able to do that dear friend. Meanwhile warm thanks for bringing to notice real needs out there. I have long association with Plan International in adopting a child and becoming a friend by writing etc.

                • Neville

Good on ya Fay.. we adopted three children over the years via World Vision but the cost became ridiculous and when I went out there, I discovered that I could fund health, education and food costs for ten children for less than half I was paying to WV...... we now send monies via Sol a great guy I met the first time I went and he makes sure all the money is used appropriately... no advertising or admin costs x

                  • Fay Slimm.

The truth can sting when is comes to costs and the like - the plight of children is taken advantage of unscrupulous persons - - good that you met an honest guy -- I have adopted two over time but shall look around wisely when it comes to renewing........... x

                    • Neville

Should you ever wish to renew.. I would be more than happy to put you in touch with Solomon x

                      • Fay Slimm.

Thank you - - -- when the time comes around for renewal I will contact you.......... x

                        • Neville

                          No problem my friend.. x

There is hungry corner and hungry corner. Several completely differing places. For one exists where real hunger kills people and beasts. Another exists in the mind of the needy. Well fed and cosseted can still be needy and hungry for something missing. Finally there is need in the desperate, a need never satisfied and as you write, everything will turn out wrong.
I try to get into the mental pictures given to me when i read poetry like this. Life has some sad jumbles beyond comprehension and i think hungry corner leads your reader into them if they are prepared to look.

We see, we hear, we momentarily convulse
                            But only momentarily
For the tragedy is playing out tooooo often
We have chosen to become oblivion to its causes

                            • Neville

yes indeed.. many are blinded by the root cause of certain problems facing our species... others are fearful of speaking out or taking any form of action to address many such problems.. thank you for visiting these words... N

May those hungry corners soon be filled with nourishment for all.
