Two gentlemen walked in,
Gentlemen certainly.
Suits, shirts, ties,
Polished shoes.
The thought came to me,
That was me
A long time ago,
When work was on the agenda.
Now retired
Much more relaxed,
Suit and ties
Now only occasionally worn,
Only worn for funerals,
Unfortunately worn more often,
As friends and family are getting older,
And some being crossed off,
Crossed off the Christmas card list.

A good write Gold. Oh dear, I didn't know to cross one or two off the list. Well, not seen them for years and they had......passed on. I was still merrily sending cards to them! Difficult to know if they are still here, seeing as we go back to 1066.
Thanks Orchi. My C List is carved in stone so I have to use a hammer and chisel to cross them off.
Erm, then again, if we fall out with people (while still on this earth), we cross them off the proverbial 'Christmas card list' sometimes.

Mentally climbing Mount Cook will be great, I mentally climbed one of the Black Cullins on Skye, I manged to get half way up the track until the mountain took over, Joyce and I sat there for a while, on that day it was the Funeral of one of our friends, JOyce read from the bible while I wrote a poem while we were sitting there at the time of his funeral.
Take care both of you.

How very true and sadly too...
Yes Neville it gets more each year.
A recent illness G has brought me to think I am enjoying what I have left I am looking forward not back any more... That way lays sadness and regret and I have so much to still be thankful for... The past has delivered me where I am today as good as it was it's up to me know to make the best of it...
Great write and emotion
Thank you Andrew, those illnesses can be a great wake up call, back in 2007 I was diagnosed with an illness and was told "If you don't have this operation you will die!" I obviously had the operation and my life was changed, I always look forward and am always positive about life not matter what issues it throws at me.
Great to hear
We are sad bc our list of acquaintences gets smaller and smaller, so let's embrace the inevitable, till the day we are crossed off the 'C' list.
My mother (being the last of her generation) passed away a year ago, at the ripe age of 90, really felt the passing of others as only a poet like you can express.
Thnx
Thank you Suresh, that passing of others can be traumatic but we must remember the good times with them.
Yes, I too wore the clothes of a businessman (a gentleman is MORE than the clothes he wears) many moons ago before i decided to float my own boat.
The difference in how one is treated in respect of ones attire is remarkable. Same man, different attire, different reception.
I used to think that was down to lack of judgement but now i realise it is just human nature. Sight is of course our prime sense.
Fitting though that you should respectfully dress for the formal and sad occasions.
Thank you d a, yes it is amazing what you wear makes people react differently to you, I know wear casual clothes all the time, but dress slightly less casually going to Church but even there I wear shorts and sandals (NO socks) in the warm weather. My attitude now is "This is me, take me as I am, if you don't like it that is your problem, not mine.
Of all places to be judged in a church should be low on the list. Oh but i am forgetting, it's only the good book that teaches 'eye of a needle' philosophy, the flock are just keeping up appearances, not behaving like christians should.
I loathe the hypocrisies in the christian churches.
Although I still go to Church as I have always done with Joyce the way she is my views of the Christian way has virtually been scuppered. I tell this to members of the Church and they have no answers so the more I am beginning to realise the falsehoods of the Christian way. Nothing will stop me from believing in God, My Spirit, it is the Christian way of life that I question and get no answers so I am starting to believe that Christianity is false.
The only reason I go to Church now is that I am in the Choir and I enjoy singing the hymns and anthems.
Good for you. I completely understand about keeping up traditions. Belief is another thing altogether.
I am encouraging people to ASK those awkward questions and BE DISSATISFIED with the ambiguous crap that the churches expect you to be satisfied with.
We had our annual Church meeting yesterday, I had the chance to air my views about the ineptitude of our Minister in caring for others, specifically Joyce. I have done this before and have a bit of a reputation of telling truths about our Church that others are scared to say. After the meeting many people came up to me and said how right I was and they agree with what I had said - they are too frightened to say it themselves.
Well to be honest Goldfinch it saddens me. I WAS brought up a christian and i have told u why my faith in the christian god waned but i do still wish the christian (anglican) church would pull itself out of the middle ages and become more 'modern' in its approach to todays needs for a spiritual 'comfort' or belief which so many of us do need. The old answers simply do not hack it in todays 'more aware' world. To my mind their answers treat us as if we were some unthinking primative sort of people. It's time that they stopped selling the ideals as told in the bible because so many of the basics of the christian model have been PROVEN to be the result of poor translation of scriptures hundreds of years ago. The most alarming was the word 'virgin' being used to describe u know who. The strict translation is 'a woman of marriageable quality'... not quite the same thing. That and many other mis-translations have been accepted by christian theologists /theologians within various churches. They should have the guts to stand by the actual meanings not the old rubbish.... rant rant rant....
The thing is... I actually care about this stiuff!
I poem my friend that does tug at the heartstrings, So much good description that everybody can identify with This Getting older lark sometimes aint much fun. An enjoyable read Thank you
Thank you Moordy, the "Getting older lark" can be great as you can get away with more in your life.
