Hal Blaine

SoulMeetsBody

Playing jazz in the fifties, but found rock and pop

A mad Spector telling him to never stop

A destructive force from The Wrecking Crew

Sonic revolutions from forgetting beat two

Inspiring a kid to go past Surfin' USA

To write a masterpiece, drums hard and strong all the way

The Boxer in a lift shaft for all to hear

Six Best Song Grammies, six great years

Disco rhythms from a disliked beat

"Hal Blaine Strikes Again" on the session sheet

The 40 number ones, still front and centre

But playing on jingles as the drum machines enter

Later working as a guard and writing a book

After losing the money his ex-wife took

He died with a legacy, the percussion no more

May he forever rest on beat two and four

  • Comment from author about the poem: Hal Blaine was an incredibly prolific session drummer. Pick any American pop song from the sixties and chances are that he's the one playing. He unfortunately died earlier this year at 90 of natural causes, so I wrote this poem to commemorate the man, incorporating some direct quotes from himself, his family and the artists that he worked with. May he rest in peace.

Thanks for the feedback! I think it was Nietzsche who said "Without music, life would be a mistake.". A bit nihilistic, but hey, that was how he rolled. Look forward to getting into the community.
