As kids we played together in the home,
A home where sport was watched ,
Then played at school.
A home that gave us our love of music.
We went to the same school,
Where our love of sport was enhanced.
I went onto play tennis and hockey for the school,
But my brother went other ways.
We always competed,
He won at squash,
I won at badminton,
But tennis was a lottery.
We would book a two hour slot
And hammer the ball at each other,
Trying to win at all costs,
But over the years it became a draw.
I went on to play tennis for county,
Cricket for local clubs.
Thirty plus years playing table tennis
For club and town, a sporty life.
He went on to go to concerts,
Listening to bands of high renown.
Everywhere he went to follow
The bands of his joy.
In work we went our different ways.
Me into science,
He into engineering,
Working all our life.
Our chosen careers changed during the years,
But at the end they ended up near the same.
Mine as a computer analyst,
His as a computer engineer.
Both now retired,
We are closer than we have ever been.
But where I listen to music and write words,
He rides his bicycle for miles and plays golf.
It seems odd to me that in old age
That the sporty one, became arty,
And the one that went to concerts,
Became sporty.

- Comment from author about the poem: Yes was one of my brothers favourite bands back in the 1970's, I can fully understand why.

A fine write Gold.
Thanks Orchi.
Were we brothers in 1066? Standing together? Or falling apart, the moment I uttered the words...…! I mucked the whole thing up. Doh!
We were certainly brothers in arms in 1066, but that stopped as soon as you drowned your sorrows after pointing up and then compounded it by putting water in my mead!
The music was a bit hard core for first thing but you words were sublime this morning. Thank you for the journey, life is fun how it can switch!
Yes the music is a bit heavy for first thing in the morning, I bet it woke you up though.
Life's changes can be so wonderful.
The ways brothers can take are varied but as long as love remains they are in safe places. A lovely read Andy of your two brotherly paths and where they have led.
So very true Fay, that live has always been there but we get in so much better now that he has retired, he is much more relaxed.
Wow is an appropriate word to use here.. Yes being one of my fave bands... but more than that.. you have crafted a poem full of super sentiments and personal disclosure that I have a lump in my throat as I think about my own younger brother......... Neville
Thank you so much Neville. As the older brother I can say one thing that makes us smile “I have fewer grey hairs than mt YOUNGER brother”
I have more hair than my younger brother.... 🙂
Thanks UNCLE ANDY for sharing a branch of your Family Tree ! SIBLINGS & PARENTS are all part of the Immediate Family we inherit ! I have BROTHER & SISTER both married with KIDS so my Parents dont hassle Angela & I for GRANDCHILDREN. Angela also has a Brother & Sister both of whom are married to Spaniards and now live in Spain ! Again they have provided Grandchildren for MAM & PAPA ! My Elder BROTHER KEN and I co-Schooled but he studied Physics (Electronics & Computing) because he thought Chemistry was too unpredictable ! He liked intellectual Sports like Chess - Scrabble ~ Bridge but also Cycling ! I was more conventional Football (Defence) Cricket (Keeper & Batsman) & Cros Country & distance Running. We are both good Swimmers ! Ken plays Piano but prefer Jazz to Classics - I play Guitar Classical & Folk - That and my A-Level in Spanish convinced PAPA to let ANGELA marry a GRINGO ! All my Family love HER - who wouldnt ! Angelas Family also love me ! Loved YES (before my TIME) and your trip down Memory Lane !
Blessings & Love to YOU & JOYCE
Love BRIAN & ANGELA XOXOX
Thank you A and B, it was so odd that we started our working life going in completely different paths but both retired from the same one.
The two of you were never far apart, it was only your approach. And as you so poetically stated strong rivalry ended in strong bond.
Thank you Suresh, so very true.
