the dog days of summer

Jon Nakapalau

are fine when you are young

and time is far away
like a dog you are training to sit

following your commands
to fetch memories like a stick

but that only lasts
into your 30's

then you turn around
and are face to face

with a wolf
who wants the meat of your days

under slowly dimming autumnal stars.

Those autumn stars show that we are going to make it to winter.
