There I was fishing rod in hand.
As soon as I had picked up
I was in another place,
Back so many years to that time
When fishing was part of me.
I pulled the line through the rod,
It was as if I hadn’t stopped,
Stopped so many years ago.
I cast the fly line,
Backwards, forwards, backwards, forwards
As I used to back in the day.
The rhythm was still there,
I could still do it,
I could still hit the spot,
The spot where I would see the trout.
It was then decided,
I will go fishing again,
Only this time it will be on water,
Not on a green grassed field!

Not quite like riding a bike but hey.. you still got it fella and I am smiling here.. smiling big mind.... get out there and do it........ Neville
Thanks Neville, it surprised me that it was still within me, as you say it was like riding a bike - I can still do that but the fitness has gone, so I can ride about ten yards and then have to stop and rest for an hour. LOL
got me laughing too mate.. its just a fact o life innit...
A fine write Gold. I got some trout - an old one - KP and her botox. I keep forgetting I married her. Well, she's never here. Always doing photos for the papers.
I bet she is a whopper when you try and pull her in on a line.
So pleased you are back with the rod Andy - looking forward to reading about your first catches dear friend.
Thanks Fay, I am sure I will write something about my first catch, it wouldn't be me if I didn't.
Hahaha, as a kid was went to fields to practice beach casting and a bit of fly-fishing.
It was a wonderful rhythm to work up a good one, something primarily satisfying!
Thank you Dan. Yes it is so true that the action of casting was still within me and it gave me great pleasure, so I hope to be off fishing this week.
That's something i never learned to do apart from age ten catching a stickleback on a home made rod. Envious.
I keep whistling a lot lately and thinking about saxophones.... i know i'm going to have to start playing again. How's the clarinet cat scaring coming along?
The clarinet is out of its case and sitting on its stand, I blew down it a little and some notes are there but as you will well know the lips need to be trained, I am sure it will come back.
You know as well that there is nothing so satisfying as playing (or singing) music so start your saxophone up again.
Hello Goldfinch60,
Thanks for a wonderful write.
I live just next to the Grand Union Canal the Brent part of it tbat runs through Wembley.
I always see anglers fishing in peace in a tranquil world of their own.
Keep writing FineB
Thank you FineB, yes there is something so satisfying in just sitting with nature, even if the fish do not come there is plenty to see and enjoy.
Bring some home, and bake it or fry it, in lemon herbs, with some asparagus, have a few friends over and just enjoy the moment.
That is the plan Suresh, nothing quite like the taste of freshly caught trout.
The first time I ever went trout fishing a friend took me out on a boat onto a reservoir, I did not catch anything that day but he did and we pulled up the the shore and he got a portable smoker from his kit, and we ate smoked trout by the water - wonderful.
Fishing is wonderful for the soul, I swear it! The catch is just full of adrenaline, I love it. Now let us know when you've actually gone fishing! 🙂
It surely is Christina, don't worry you will know when I go fishing, hopefully this week.
Ah, I'm with you on this seeing I was a sea fisherman for 5 yers after I left shcool. You bring back so many memories from 30 years ago. Love you poem..
I had not fished for over twenty years but the casting technique was still there, now I need to see if the 'catching trout' technique is still there.
