The Midnight Maelstrom

Nicholas Browning

Etched within a formless breath,

There rested a broken dream;

That few, and that of many -

Were too blinded to have seen.

A glimpse along the river's limb

Was all that need be perceived.

Serene currents of blackened blue,

Dispersed all but man's humility.

Along that starlit path to strut,

Humming gleefully a birdsong tune.

Discovered there - an ethereal lough -

In the center of June's monsoon.

She cried unto herself - such a wail death would bring.

From her much was stolen, never to be replaced.

Too horrid to accept and listen;

Thieves, and their misgivings.

Gazing upon her luminous glum,

In the Midnight's sultry fray -

Reminded then by a heartfelt need,

I sobbed with her; as need relayed.

Poseidon's child gazed within, addressing life's inner woes.

She then spoke with a gentle wave -

And the Maelstrom was overthrown.

I saw then her wondrous smile -

As in excitement her waters churned.

She then bestowed her heart to me,

And I gave her mine, in return.
