Prom of Peace.

Goldfinch60

The music came towards me,

I stopped,

Stopped and listened.

I was drawn into the passion,

The passion and emotion.

It could be felt,

It was so powerful to me.

The music filled my heart,

Filled my mind

With such power of emotion.

It was a statement by the cellist

That his country was wrong,

Wrong in attacking that place,

That place where the composer,

The composer of the work was born.

Even now, so many years later

The emotion can be heard,

As I heard it this morning,

As the Russian Cellist played,

Played Dvorak on that day,

That day when Russia attacked,

Attacked Czechoslovakia.

The power of music defying,

Defying war.

  • Comment from author about the poem: On 21st August 1968 Russian tanks attacked Czechoslovakia. On that night at the Promenade Concert Rostropovich (cellist) and the USSR State Symphony Orchestra played Dvorak’s cello concerto. There were tears running down Rostropovich’s face – as there were mine as I listened to the recording some fifty one years later. I make no excuse for putting the whole of the concerto on here.

A good write Gold. It was getting near the time we were on the moon, to greet the first astronauts there (1969). We must have got there before them somehow.

If only music could be the weapon of mass peace and goodwill.

History tells us of the reversal of dictatorships in the 20th century. Which i am pleased to have witnessed. But still there is oppression of populations and mass migrations.
We should all at least be cognisant of these.

  • Fay Slimm.

Music conveys all the emotions and that time of sadness can surely be heard each time the concerto is played - thank you for sharing that stay of power with us dear Andy

So true Fay, music can be so powerful.

    • ANGELA & BRIAN

Thanks UNCLE ANDY ~ BRIAN here ANGELA is fast asleep in her Bed (4pm Sat in NZ !) Love the whole Concerto (thanks for that) and the historical reference ! I have a Cousin (Hannah) who is a professional Cellist and it it can be a very melancholy instrument ~ also capable of many moods. Thanks for caring & sharing !

Blessings & Peace to YOU & JOYCE
      Love BRIAN & ANGELA 💙🧡💙🧡💙

Thank you Brian. I to think that the cello is a very melancholy instrument but the cello recording in 1965 that is the best is the Elgar Concerto by Jacqueline du Pre with the London Symphony Orchestra and Sir John Barbirolli.
