'Harvest in 19th Century America'
---------
Tune: Golden Sheaves
('To thee, O Lord, our hearts we raise')
*********
Heap high the farmer's wintry hoard
It gathered with no discord
High heap the golden corn, for known
No richer gifts Autumn [has] shown
It best to love the hardy gift
To the Lord our praises lift
Gift of golden wheat fields bestowed
Before storms make their inroad
We sowed the seeds o'er hill and plain
In sunny May, now again
It did ripen, and as it grew
Marauding birds away flew
For we the seed from them did guard
Through bright June days it ne'er tired
But leaves did spring up green and fair
Midsummer's soft yellow hair
And now with Autumn's moonlit eves
The Harvest comes, man receives
Of the good produce of the land
All sent to us by God's hand
Ears from stalks are separated
The Lord He us again fed
Bringing the harvest home, we praise
God's provision through all days
Richer than was the fabled gift
Of Apollo, for we sift
With fair hands here the golden grain
Give thanks to God once again
Though Apollo, Greek god showered
And mythical times flowered
Yet truth be, God does create all
Meets needs of who on Him call

- Comment from author about the poem: A hymn-poem in 8.7.8.7. 8.7.8.7. metre. The hymn in the clip starts at 2:00, and Fido appears at 3:50! The last verse of this poem could be a bit spurious if Harvest was attributed to Apollo.

BRIAN HERE ~ 9am SATURDAY a chance to RELAX from *The Trivial round the Common Task* ! I love the WEEKEND when I only have to work on FIELD COURSES and Research into COASTAL EROSION in the Coast of East Anglia. East Anglia is very RURAL so we do have some lovely HARVEST FESTIVALS in the Older Anglian Churches ~ very JOHN BETJAMEN ! Thanks for adapting our Poem of last week ! Angela & I never ever copyright anything we write or adapt ~ because the MUSE flows FREE and all our Poetry etc is freely avialable to anyone anywhere !. Thanks for highlighting the ARCHERS ~ My Dads favourite Radio Programme. He prefers RADIO (especially Classic FM & Radio 3 !) to TV. It enables him to Read while listening !
Blessings to YOU & YOUR Censoring Cur !
Love in the Spirit B & A 💙🧡💙🧡💙
Them trivial rounds and common tasks will furnish all we need to ask....., I believe is it how it goes. A lovely John Keble hymn. I'm not sure about John Betjeman now, recalling his murderous line 'Come, welcome bombs, and fall on Slough (UK)!' I know he didn't like the place, but no need to blow it up. Doh!
Nice one,,,like your style!
Thanks Mott. As I say, I have adapted this from a poem by a couple on here.
Orchi,
Thank you for sharing your beautiful write!
I love the title!
Upon hearing your words, my Aunt reminisced about her parents’ harvest days she remembers!
~Laura~🌻
Thanks Laura. The original is here, by Angela & Brian, couple of days ago. I've adapted it.

Ah, I love this. Such a great write.
Thanks Alta. That could be my imaginary 18+ 'watchdog' at 3:50 in the clip! Name is Fido, barks at anyone who should mark poems appropriate poems 18+, but 'forget' to do so! lol.
Thanksgiving is just around the corner. A timely and well written reminder to be grateful.
Thanks Fred.
Harvest festival today, I will be singing for my supper.
