Safety for the Slandered

Tune: Rosefield

('Bread of heaven, on thee we feed')

Psalm 109 v.26-31

********

Help me, LORD my God, save me

According to your mercy

That my enemies may know

You have acted for me so

I a sheep in your pasture

With your flock shall e'er endure

Let enemies curse, but you

Bless us, by and by you do

When enemies arise let

Them be ashamed even yet

But let your servants rejoice

You, righteous LORD, are our choice

Let adversaries be clothed

With shame, it on them bestowed

Let them be confused, and know

Their evil deeds shall not grow

But as for me, I will praise

The LORD greatly, His name raise

I will praise Him midst people

Who do call upon Him all

For He shall stand with the poor

To save them from troubles sore

And from those who them oppose

The LORD's help to the poor flows

  • Comment from author about the poem: A hymn-poem in 7.7.7.7.7.7. metre. I have picked out the 'good' bits! Not the most praise-y of Psalms, as it deals with slanders. The Old Testament can be tit-for-tat in places.
