Tune: England's Lane

('For the beauty of the earth')

Psalm 144 v.11 - 15

********

Free us, Lord, from enemies

Then the people, each one sees

Your goodness, so may our sons

Grow up as plants, fruitful ones

Daughters be  as corner-stones

Of palaces with their thrones

That our barns be full of store

Your provisions evermore

Enough to share with needy

And with poor of land, so be

Sheep producing thousands yields

E'en ten thousands in our fields

That cattle be strong to bear

Farmers tending them with care

No breaking or stealing there

But with your blessing well fare

No complaining or grumbling

Thanks ot you for everything

Happy is the people who

Are in such state, you renew

Lord, them with your heavenly grace

They find favour in their place

Yes, happy that people, see

Whose God is the LORD so be (Amen)

There's something about farm work that has always fascinated me. I don't know but whenever I gaze out at a field it makes me almost reminiscent of something I've never even done! I'm sure there's a definition for that but I'm too lazy to look it up. I loved the inclusion of that vibe in this. Gave it a wonderful contrast. Nice write, Orch.

Thanks N. The line about farmers is not actually in the Psalm verses. But it's implied, I think. I mean, the thousands of sheep and the cattle mentioned are not gonna just appear in a puff of smoke, as if by magic, are they?!

Thanks A&B. I read somewhere that the author of 'We plough the fields' based the hymn on Psalm 144, or part of it, with17 verses originally. Phew! That's a lot of ploughing and scattering!.

I read into it as a foreshadowing of eternal life to come Orchidee; an eschatological metaphor. All glory to God for this creation and the bountiful new heaven and earth to come!

Thanks Gary. Yes, I believe we can see it this way too.
