Gentlemen become Hooligans.

Goldfinch60

Two more to watch today,

Leaving just four to play,

Four of the forty eight

And I have seen them all.

Forty two matches of the game

The gentleman’s game,

The gentleman’s game played by hooligans.

Each game has been different,

In each game power has been seen,

Skill has been seen,

But tempers are rarely raised.

The beauty of rugby is just that

When the final whistle goes,

The hooligans become gentlemen

And leave the field together,

Talking, laughing and joking.

Those watching are the same,

All intermingled,

Wanting their team to win,

But only on the pitch.

They laugh, sing and drink with each other,

Before after and during each match,

As the most important thing is the game,

The game of Rugby,

Rugby, that game for gentlemen,

Played by hooligans.

  • Comment from author about the poem: The Rugby Union World Cup is being played at the moment and I have seen all the matches so far, (Three were cancelled due to the typhoon)of the forty eight there are two to play today which I am about to watch and then four more over the next two weekends ending with the final. So for all my friends I agree with them, I AM a Rugby nut!!

      • Poetic Dan

I must of passed hooligans and went straight to thug! Never really liked the game but it is always great to see the difference between that and football!

Although to me personally they are have an archaic feel to them.

        Great stuff

        • Goldfinch60

Thanks Dan, to me it is the ultimate game where after all hell (and skill) is let lose on the pitch all is fine as soon as the final whistle goes, unlike soccer where the the fights still happen after the game is over.

          • Poetic Dan

I grew up in the football chants and it was never an atmosphere I really liked!
Most that like rugby I would say are more pleasant when games are on.

Hope you enjoy the rest, you deserve it ๐Ÿ˜‰
