The Poem What I Wrote (Sorry Ernie)

Goldfinch60

I said I’d tell a poem

To this august crowd,

Then I had to find one,

And say it right out loud.

Would it be by Shakespeare,

Milton, Poe or Keats.

It had to by someone

To keep you in your seats.

Words of yellow daffodils,

Or maybe love or war,

Of youth or age or beauty;

I hope I’m not a bore.

The modern type of poem?

That doesn’t ever rhyme.

That seems to go on for ever,

With no punctuation or break for breath or sense of rhythm but drones on in a monotonous way that is only understandable in the strange mind of the author.

But no, you’re stuck with this one,

Not a massive work of art.

But it’s good enough for you lot!

So with that, I’ll now, depart.

  • Comment from author about the poem: Our poetry group has been asked to recite some poems at a Christmas get together, this is one that I may recite. The remark "Sorry Ernie" in the title refers to Ernie Wise of Morecombe and Wise a wonderful British comedy partnership. Ernie used to refer the "The play what I wrote"

Erm, I know some 'With no punctuation...droning on.....etc' poems.
I will sing them to the authors. That'll put them off writing long, incomprehensible, waffling poems! heehee.

    • Goldfinch60

The only problem with that is that they will run away and not hear the rousing crescendo at the end of the piece.

Never depart from writing though since such delightful awesomely rhymed poems can never be a bore. And wow it reads as marvelous as the words of daffodils that your imaginative ink sings like. Kudos for this poetic delight that im glad i didn't miss.

Morecombe and Wise are timeless in their comedy. I have written another one about Eric Morecombe after I had seen a play called Morecombe. I may put that one up tomorrow.

I'm just sorry Andre Preview can't now be here to put music to it ~ notes not necessarily in the right order.

            Ex animo, Alan

            • Goldfinch60

But I do put them in the right order, it is called jazz!

As a 'dumb' American, I don't know anything about Morecombe and Wise, but I do like your poem!

              • Goldfinch60

Nothing 'dumb' about you Fred but it may be worth looking them up on YouTube, their comedy is timeless.

                • FredPeyer

will do and let you know what I think!
