Attack.

Fay Slimm.

Attack.

As sinks the cherry-plum sun
a hawk
unleashes his fire
and over naked-elm hill dives,
plume-tight,
!
!
!
straight downwards,
hangs in still air momentarily
wide-eyed and loose clawed
raptor then crashes
*!*
into a lone sparrow's chatter,
writing death warrant
**!**
*.*
*
in whitening dusk.

^^^^^^

^^^^
Weight of sudden attack
met success with
feathered explosion from
battle-high rush
of pitched buckle surprise.

* "" *
^ ^ ^ ^ ^ ^ ^

Grieving the slain I then spy
on moth-night's
distant and darkling horizon
a mate
~ - 0> almost stationary

in the ether

 - -- -  perhaps waiting

for brood's late feed
she, snatching bait in what
seems frenzy
quickly shoots tree-ward
~ ~ ~ ~ ~

before dark blackens sky

to ebony crystal.

 As sinks the cherry-plum sun

I admit
that for chicks to exist
hunger has to be sated and
hawk's display,

!

!
by accurate awesome speed
of nature's raw
beauty invites recognition
for such fearless skill.

to witness such an event was a privilege, though some might argue otherwise... to capture it in words alone, an incontestable marvel...... N

Wow, what an ending too! a difficult read for me. Took a few attempts but I got there.

        Thank you
        Much appreciated

So pleased you enjoyed the ending after those few attempts to read Attack my friend - these raptors deserve more praise than they get from the poet's pen - - - warmly from Fay

GOOD EVENING FAY ~ We love the Picture and the Poem ! Nature RED in Tooth & Claw indeed ! The Human Race have largely ceased to be Hunter Gathers so we have put ourselves outside the natural Food Chains & Food Webs ! We farm our meat and kill our Animals humanely and it is seldom that we end up as Animal Food for the Big Cats etc. Because of this most of us avoid Abatoires and we no longer raise and kill & pluck our own Turkey for Christmas ! Because of this we are often horrified if we see a *Kill in the Wild* forgetting that is how they survive 24/7 !
Hawks survive in the wild by killing small mammels and small Birds such as Sparrows ! In this elegant Poem you have captured the moment & its after-effect ! Thanks for caring & sharing !

          Blessings & Peace & Joy
          Love ANGELA & BRIAN

          Wonderful write Fay.

The raptors only kill for food and for every bird taken by a raptor to feed themselves and their chicks four hundred are killed by cats for pleasure.

Unquestionably, a mesmerizing feat that your words have poetically rolled out for us to see.
But life harsh reality is that for each successful hunt, there are nine tries.

          • Fay Slimm.

How true Suresh that nothing worth have comes easily to raptors........... thank you so much for your visit and comment.
