Upon The Walls Of Written Times.

kevin browne

As singers dance across the stage
Shakespeare's Hamlet into a play
And an audience sat back relaxing
To be or not to be is the question'

St Paul's Cathedral such a devotion
Angelo had brushes full of emotion
As this poor boy had his last chance
Romeo and Juliet met their romance.

And upon the walls of written times
To wonder of it to see what you find
There was Homer with his pen afloat
As Henry, the VII was building a moat.

Of course, we know Plato and Socrates
Who taught to be polite and to please
But, if you do say thank you and doubt
The abacus had worked Egyptians out

For the pyramid alignment to the stars
They sat to work out that it was Mars
Oh. those 100 miles of cobbled stone
Straight enough for a Roman to roam.

Now as he painted many chimney pots
From cardboard boxes from the shops
And as he waited outside factory gates
Lowry had this full of a love that waits.

The London Bridge and the cold river
800 years ago a poor death did shiver
From poverty to poetry with a new light
Chaucer's chance of bringing some life.

And parts of beauty you'll find in art
A full confession for breaking apart
A Grand Canyon was carved through
Mona Lisa smiles and won't ever move.

Mozart's melodies just one more time
When Beethoven brought music alive
Oh no it can't be Wolfgang Amadeus
A period of pure light and pure genius.

And the wizard of oz with his cables
Anne Boleyn's head left on the table
Mademoiselle's admirable and polite
Leaning over a Piza to see the sights.

As all king's horses and the king's men
Never knew Napoleon was killing them
The addictions of sins start to take hold
WH, Auden's poetry before he gets old.

And now those Shakespeare's curtains
Sinatra sang that he made it for certain
And when the history has caught us up
It starts over again with a love to touch.
