Pendulum: a weight hung from a fixed point so that it can swing freely backward and forward.
That’s what my heart feels like.
The pericardium is the fixed point and my heart is the weight.
It swings freely in my chest.
Like a grandfather clock waiting
Waiting to sound the alarm that rattles my insides.
Every heartbeat is a tick.
And every tick gets closer to the end.
Is the weight ever to heavy for the fixed point? Is my heart too heavy that it might drop?
Will it shatter throughout my body? jagged pieces of each chamber spewing through my lungs, hitting my sternum, tumbling into my liver and so on. Or will it drop whole? Ripping through everything.
What makes a heart heavy? Regret? Loneliness? Love?
Tick, lub-DUB, tick, lub-DUB. Tick.

This is such a deft juxtaposition of anatomy and sentiment. The questions towards the end are so pertinent. Thanks for sharing.
Good Evening BRAYDON ~ Brian here ! Welcome to MPS and thanks for your first POEM. Nice Free Verse style with lots of Rhythm ~ just like a HEART~ most important organ in the human body ? It does jump about a bit (like a pendulum ?) as it beats ~ as seen in videos of Open Heart Surgery ! Your description of the heart breaking and shatering through ones body ~ is quite alarming ! What does make a Heart Heavy and eventually breaks it ? In my experience LOVE. It happens ~ Im 36 but I have found my true love (ANGELA 31) and we are getting married in April ! At the moment Our TWO Hearts are beating as ONE and we pray they will for at least the next 50 YEARS. Im a BIOCHEMIST & ANGELA is a PHYSIO so between us we know a lot about the CARDIOVASCULAR SYSTEM and how it keeps us alive ! Some say the HUMAN HEART is just a four chambered pump ~ but to US that is the greatest understatement ever ~ AMEN Thanks for sharing ~ much food for thought !
BLESSINGS & Peace to You & Yours
