Diligent Workman - 2 Timothy Series (3)

Tune: Melcombe

('New every morning is the love')

2 Timothy 2 v.14-19

**********

Be diligent to show yourself

Approved unto God, share His wealth

Be a workman that does not need

To be ashamed, but others feed

Feed them with the word of truth so

The gospel message they shall know

But profane and vain babblings shun

They only be profit to none

Though they will increase more and more

Discern, teach the Lord's word for sure

To oppose the ungodliness

Of false teachings, they not us bless

Such teachings will spread as canker

Which those led astray wi;; prefer

Things such as this they say, aghast

The resurrection it has past

In so saying they overthrow

The faith of some, they now not know

What to believe as true, deceived

For they these falsehoods have received

Yet the foundation of God stands

Sure, having this seal, to all lands:

"The Lord knows them that are His", so

"Let those who know Him Christ's life show"

  • Comment from author about the poem: A hymn-poem in 8.8.8.8. metre. The thought in verse 4 is that false teachers were saying that the resurrection is 'past', as in 'It's been and gone - you've missed it'. That caused others to become unsettled in the hope of their own future resurrection, as in verse 5.

Where did she meet Messrs Gent and Thee? I don't use thee and thou much. well, we don't say it in the 21st Century, do we, unless we're fogies? Do you know Fogey Berles (he or she?).
