Cowbell Chimings

Tune: Kingsfold

('I heard the voice of Jesus say')

Adapted with permission from 'Alpine Melody'

poem by Alan S. Jeeves

*********

Upon high, an Alpine pasture

Gleams golden with the sun

A herd of cattle grazing there

Enjoy the morning fun

Some chewing and too some mooing

And rolling in the grass

Some to-ing, fro-ing, and dancing

Close by the mountain pass

Higher up there the peaks are snowed

But here it's yellow bright

Sundrops showering on the land

Contrasting with the white

The greenness of the fertile fields

Providing bovine lunch

The goodness there in the grasslands

Sustains the happy bunch

And if you do move amongst them

About this time of day

Your eyes will see the band, full well

Your ears will her them play

These maestros they of the cowbell

'Tis worn around the neck

Resounding in the gentle breeze

And swaying as they trek

They play their tune, so merrily

A melody to share

An echo sounds in the valley

Invades the yodeled air

So play away on the cowbell

For everyone to hear

Play them here and there, and too then

Do play them far and near

  • Comment from author about the poem: A poem that can be sung in 8.6.8.6. 8.6.8.6. metre. I have only adapted this slightly, mostly with joining words of 'and', 'too', etc, to make up the syllables per line. Plus a sort of Alpine scene in the clip - well, country anyway!

    Hi Steve.
A fine job made of this. I hope that you had lots of fun with it, as much as I did. It's good to swap notes with you and I hope that we can do it again sometime soon. We've milked this one for all it's worth!

    Ex animo, Alan

Nice piece of music also Steve. I played this on electric guitar today in E minor (as it is here) and sounds okay. Thanks for introducing me to it.

Thanks Alan. I dunno if it's E minor or a Morris Minor - oh, uncultured me! It is a sort of folk-like tune.
