Through Temptations

Tune: Heinlein

('Forty days and forty nights')

Luke 4 v.1-4 & v.14

***********

Jesus by the spirit led

To the desert, He no bread

Nor other earthly food there

In wilderness He did share

Forty days and forty nights

No tasty foods or delights

But likely did drink water

Though hunger pains they did stir

The devil did tempt Him there

It is too much for to bear

If the Son of God you be

Turn these stones here to bread, see

But Jesus He did reply

Man not live by this supply

Shall not live by bread alone

But by each word of God known

Each word that does sure proceed

From mouth of God, each word heed

He returned from desert filled

With power, He did not yield

Not yield to the evil one

But empowered, He the Son

In the Spirit, temptations

Did overcome, e'en each one

  • Comment from author about the poem: A hymn-poem in 7.7.7.7. metre on a Lenten season theme. What do you think (verse 2)? It does not say in the Bible verses that Jesus did NOT drink for 40 days and nights, only that He did not eat. I added that in after reading a piece on it. Where water in the desert?

We had that hymn in church yesterday!

Please don't be tempted to sing during this period of lent Orchi.

Thanks Gold. I should give up singing for 40 days then! But then they say - why stop? give it up for ever. Doh!
