I can help a dog but I can't write it a letter, so I'll have to start with you
Every tool has its job and every tool is meant to help get us! to the point that we become the only tool that is needed!
I've lost count how many times owner's with dogs harnessed up that have not long been rescued!
Looking like they have no control and holding on for life, stroking it saying "it's okay"
Now each time I offer any advice 99% of it, I get looked at as if they are the only one that could help/handle this dog.
Today was a huge breed, bouncing up and down, trying it's hardest to get over to us. As I stop hoping they could relax before walking on (yes that would help you), I suggested not using a harness, pointing at my 3 (calm) dogs, 2 on collars and one with a Halti (goes around the nose).
I was not shocked to get a response of "I don't want to hurt its neck!" Now forgive for not knowing the breed (Dog first, breed second) but I know it looked like a white fluffy lion (Akita) that could not wait to play or just take our space!
This company is the biggest in the UK for rehousing and "helping" those dogs that really struggle to adapt to human way of life. The information that comes from them and yes this has been many cases, doesn't seem to help at all. They are actually making it worse by letting those that take a dog, think that they have control...
I am thinking this year I will send my local and head office sites a wonderful email on this subject.
I would be willing to give all my spare time in demonstrating and backing up that a harness gives us no control, making us nothing but anchors...

Must admit being a harness owner I never understood the, reason for it. Dogs instinctively want to pull, more than others. Nowadays I know my dog is safe off the lead but it still doesn't mean that I will let her off it. I agree with collars and haltiies.
We have become very confused between our and their emotions, fight, flight or freeze is what we mostly have in common..
I see it getting worse not better!

It doesnt help when we anthropomorphise animals eithet. That being said my Bella has her own voice which she projects on us on a daily iky basis haha
Seeing your videos which are always so enjoyable and reading you on your subject of expertise (dogs) i'd have no hesitation in following your advice.
I love dogs and clearly dogs love us too by and large.
That's one happy looking dog in your picture today no doubt pulling you along on that skateboard again.... loadsa fun.
Ha, unless it's a special rescue case, you my friend I feel naturally know how to follow your instincts.
I even lost the nerve after my lady pointing out my spelling mistakes, to post this on my work page...
In the animal kingdom I see myself as an equal, in human Society I've conditioned myself to feel less than...

Dan, dont worry about education, grammar or spelling mate.... communication is what matters..... the way i was taught those things at school was ok for 1960's but times move on and so does language.
You have important stuff to say, to give, so say it any way you choose. You are a good communicator and ppl here understand u perfectly well.... ppl here WANT to read more from you so dont have any worries about being "less than" (your words) because you aint less than anyone...... I'm gonna say it again...you have as much right to be here as the stars and the trees....... now smile and fart and go kiss that baby.
