VE DAY MAY 8TH 1945 ! LIVERPOOL

ANGELA & BRIAN

THIS POEM IS CULLED ~ From accounts of VE DAY and the Celebrations it spawned in Liverpool on 8th May 1945 & the following days !  They could feel the PEACE !

YOU COULD FEEL THE PEACE !

In Liverpool we really knew there has been a WAR

But now it was all over ~ we prayed for ever !

There were gaps in our Street ~ were once there had been houses

There were gaps in our Hearts ~ for Family & Friends

Over 3,000 People had died in Liverpool in the War

But NOW after six years of conflict there was PEACE !

Tables were set up in the Street ~ every House had a Union Jack

Long stored Tins of Pineapple Chunks & Pears were unearthed

Tins of meat ~ Bottles of Wine ~ Fresh baked Scones & Cakes

A feast which us Younger Children had never seen ! It was ......

Christmas (Roast Chicken) Easter (Chocolate) Birthday (Cakes)

All rolled into one !  Before we ate ~ we had two Minutes Silence

For the millions of Servicemen & Women & Civilians who had perished.

Mrs Jones rolled out her Joanna into the Street and played ...........

While we sang all the Old Songs ~ Keep the Home Fires Burning

Roll out the Barrell ~ Land of Hope & Glory & We*ll Mett Again !

We did have some Servicemen who were manning the Ack Ack Guns

And Sailors from different Nationalities & Americans from Burtonwood.

Most of our Fathers were (hopefully) on their way Home some we hadn*t

Seen for Years !  The Church Bells Rang ~ Bonfires were lit and ..........

FIREWORKS appeared ! It sounded like a BLITZ ~ But we knew it WASN*T !

YOU COULD FEEL THE PEACE ~ AMEN !

A beautiful poetic documentary Brian and Angela, as I was reading it, it was like I was really there.

A very happy VE Day to you, and please stay safe.

BRIAN HERE - Good Evening AS thanks for your encouraging comment its always good to read what the children wrote about there own experience of VE Day (08.05.45) they will all be in their mid-Eighties now and the WW2 Vets are all in their mid-Nineties ! In 2025 we will be able to to celebrate VE DAY 80 with a bit more Ponp & Circumstance. We*ve had a great day ! At 4pm we all had tea in our front Gardens. We invited 5 of our New Nieghbours (weve only been married 6 weeks) so it was a nice way to meet them. At 5pm we shared a |Bottle of Prosecco - AMEN !

      Blessings & Peace & Joy

BRIAN HERE ~ Good Evening UNCLE STEVE ~when one reads these accountsof VE Day 1945 ~ especially those of the Children ~ the JOY of it ~ the THRILL of it ~ the fact that they would see their Daddies again after 4 or 5 years was like a *Dream come True* and that was how they wrote it. Through their eyes I was there ! Some of them have been speaking on TV today *Lest We Forget* AMEN !

Blessings & Joy to You & Your Prying Pooch !

Oohh I recall the end of The Boer Wars too - a sort of classical remembrance, meaning one is very old. I was there in person of course!

A warm and telling story of that time when peace came again and the joy that brought tears to the heart of those who were there - a well expressed verse where Liverpool celebrated the release from war and thank you for sharing it dear duo.

BRIAN HERE ~ Good Evening - FAY. Looking at the footage today of the VE Day Celebrations (08/05/45) and listening to the Testimony of those who were Children on the Day (now in their mid-Eighties) reiforced everything I tried to say in my Poem based on what Children thought about & experienced on VE Day on the Day ~ 8th May 1945 ! It stayed in their minds forever = just as the events of today (in LOCKDOWN) will remain in ours. Perhaps on VE DAY 80 (2025) we will be able to celebrate with a little more Pomp & Ceremony ~ AMEN !

            Blessings & Peace & Joy

Fly the Flag for VE Day 75 ~ AMEN !
