Reigning Ruler

Tune: Cruger

('Hail to the Lord's anointed')

Psalm 97 parts

********

The Lord reigns, let earth rejoice

People, make Him your choice

Let the many isles be glad

Not mourn, no longer sad

Clouds, darkness, Him round about

He awesome with no doubt

Righteousness, judgement, they be

His throne's foundations, see

Before Him does go a fire

For enemies it dire

It burns them up, they stand not

This be their outcome, lot

His lightning the world lightened

The earth's fear was heightened

In awe of Him thy trembled

Each village and town walled

Mountains they did as wax melt

The Lord's presence they felt

He the Lord of the whole earth

Praise Him, give Him His worth

The heavens his righteousness

Declare, all people, yes

See His glory displayed here

His works show He is near

For you Lord are high o'er all

And near who on you call

Far o'er all gods exalted

Yet by Him we are fed

You who who Him love, hate evil

His saints they shall fare well

He from the wicked does save

Their advances does stave

Light is sown for the righteous

The Lord shall bless e'en us

And gladness for th upright

Is sown, hearts filled and bright

Give thanks at the remembrance

Of His holiness hence

His holy name endures e'er

For it shall perish ne'er

Well what kind of a ruler is that god if he lets a virus like covid 19 slip past his vigilance? Or isn't he on our side at all really..... just out to punish us for those sordid figurines of a man nailed to a cross which some of us perpetuate?

      Did you just sneeze?

Thanks dusk. The belief is (and in some of my other poems too) that God never loses control, that He is omniscient (all-knowing) and omnipotent (all-powerful). There is the judgement side to His nature though too. In some of the Old Testament plagues are sent where the people have disobeyed Him. They would say God sent the plagues, whether directly, or indirectly through human's choices and situations (wet markets?).
Yet the New Testament outlook is of God sending His Sons Jesus to die on the cross (and rise again) for our sins, taking our punishment there. Not that we are always cosy now, but are disciplined by Him at times.
It's maybe just 'the way things work out' often. I mean, what about World Wars; other sufferings; etc? Hopefully Christians are not holding to, and trusting in a God, as in a sort of Cloud Cuckoo Land. Not: 'I don't know if He is there, but we best believe in Him just in case He sends us a thunderbolt to destroy us all!'
