Old And New

orchidee

Tune: Richmond

('City of God, how broad and far')

Luke 5 v.36-39

************

Not put new piece of a garment

On old, it will make rent

Tear from the old, and matches not

A disagreeable lot

Not put new win in wineskins old

It will not work, be told

For the new wine will wineskins burst

Outcome worse than the first

For old wineskins will ruined be

New wine will be spilled see

But put new wine in wineskins new

And both are preserved true

Yet no one having drunk old wine

Straightway says, 'It is fine

Give me the new', but says rather

'I find the old better'

  • Comment from author about the poem: A hymn-poem in 8.6.8.6. metre. A couple of Jesus' stories. I used 'wineskins' instead of 'bottles', as glass bottles may not 'burst'. Not sure what a wineskin is though. The last stanza speaks of human nature not always trying new things straightaway. But anyone tasting my wine DOES desire the new wine straight away - as I've added water to the old wine! heehee. An apocryphal tale there - not strictly Scriptural. 'You made up that last bit, Orchi'.

Knowing you the wine would have had water in it anyway so it should have been spilled - spilled down the drain!

Thanks Gold. Doh! I best stick with sewing up clothes then, as in the first part of this poem.

    • dusk arising

I wondered where the communion wine was going!

      • orchidee

Thanks dusk lol. Hic! I only drank up what was left over. Someone has to drink it up at the end, if it's been 'blessed' - true!

I believe a pig's or goat's bladder was used to store wine in days or yore... interesting verse Orchi.

        • orchidee

Thanks Fay. Ooh, we mustn't ruin pig's/goat's bladders these days then! There's not that many around. Being very old, I should have remembered what wineskins are.

Good Afternoon Uncle Steve ~ Thanks for the Hymn & Poem. There is an analogy of New Hymns requiring New Tunes but I wouldnt dare mention it here ! Wineskins were Goat Skins annd being Natural Products they did not last for ever ! New wine would be still feremnting so it would build up a pressure and burst the Old Wineskin - but not a New One ~ OK.

Blessings to You & Furtive Fido

Thanks A&B. You can mention the new tunes! There are some oldies with 'Irregular Metres' as well as some new ones. It's just that, if I must rhyme (don't have to always), the 'irregularities' are tricky!

Cooee, that you two in pic?! Changed pic from Smokey.

            • Suresh

I never get a chance to sober up for it's the tasting that keeps me drunk...and the skins flowing

Thanks Suresh lol. You got them pig-skins? Does the Co-op sell them? lol.
