Being Bilingual.

Goldfinch60

They are out there,

Those clever people

Who can speak other languages,

As well as their mother tongue.

When people talk about them

I tell them

I am bilingual.

They look at me in awe

And ask which languages I speak,

So obviously I tell them

English is the one I have known,

Known all my life,

But in that long life

I have learned to speak another,

One that comes so easily to me,

As it comes to me quite naturally.

Apart from English

I am totally fluent,

In speaking Rubbish!

  • Comment from author about the poem: I have always said that I am bilingual in this way, I felt I had to write this as my younger granddaughter had her University Degree results yesterday and achieved a First Class Degree with distinction in Spoken French and Italian.

      That counts to me.
I’ve often told my peers that I am fluent in English and sarcasm.

That's another language that can be so glorious in which to be fluent, I do use it as well.

When I went to grammar school back in the sixties we had to do Latin in the first two years and I think I still hold the record for the lowest ever result for a Latin Exam.

I had some friends he was a London cockney and she was from La Reunion a French speaking Island. Both were bilingual but the funny thing was that when ever he had to tell their daughter off he always did it in French.
