ANGELA Here ~ This is the STORY of El Loco de Las Ramblas as recounted to me by El Abuelo Mio (My Paternal Grandfather). It is presented as Una Sonata Doble (2 x 14) in blank verse ~ iambic pentameter. He left no will but (according to Grandpa) there was a note in his Cash Box which said *Por La Catederal de La Famiglia Sagrada ~ AMEN* The Cathedral - where He often Prayed - is due to be finished by 2025 ! THEY ALL CALLED HIM ~ El Loco ~ The Mad One
A familiar sight on Las Ramblas
Wide walkway ~ Home of Flower Sellers ~ And
Static Human Statues ~ in BARCELONA !
Toreadors ~ Ballerinas ~ Kings ~ Queens.
HE looked just like an El Greco Pianting
Grey Cloak & his face & beard painted Grey !
He hung a sign on His Plinth ~ with the words
*EL GRECO PINXIT* He never moved once.
Coins dropped unasked ~ in his Sombrero
Bastante por una Paella y ...................
Una demi-botella de Rioja !
No one knew his Pedigree or Origin ?
He lived in HUT behind the Cathedral
And could often be found inside ~ lighting
A Candle ~ singing *Gloria a Dios*
LA POLICIA didnt bother Him ~ Cos
He was Un Excentrico ~ Espanoles
Amor Excentricos ~ there*s so many
Especially all along Las Ramblas !
He disappeared for a Week ~ Police found Him
Dead in his Hut ~ surrounded by Rioja Bottles !
BUT there was a SURPRISE ~ In locked cash box
They discovered His real Name was El Duque
Don Carlos de Salamanca ~ and a
Bank Account for fifteen million PESETAS* !
*This would be about 100,000 EUROS for the CHURCH

Good Evening Uncle Mike - Pleased you enjoyed it ~ True stories are always the best and (in our experience) always make the best poems. His gift was pre Euro and would be equivalent to about 100,000 Euros. Gaudi always ran out of Money (but not IDEAS !) for the Cathedral. As you know BARCELONA isnt just a CITY it is an experience. I always encourage people to go at least once. One of our extended Family was doing A-Level Art and her theme was Spirals. She stayed in Barcelona with the Orchestra (Basoon) and took lots of photos inside the Cathedral which gave her lots of inspiration & ideas.

What an unexpected ending to this story of he who was called "mad" - - the stored cash showed a very different side to his mind and intelligence and thank you for sharing it with us dear Angela.
Angela here ~ Good Evening Fay ~ Thanks for your encouraging reply. 15M PESETAS was a big contribution in 1960 (Spain adopted the Euro in 1999) and due to high inflation over the last 60 years the 15M pesetas in 1960 would be worth 4M Euro today. If they invested it (it all went to the Cathedral) we should have it finished by 2025 ! Have you been to Barcelona ? It is an exerience not a City !
