Fare ye well

L. B. Mek

Notice of absence from L. B. Mek
'fare ye well' kind friends

When those accustomed to sidestepping

my languid shadow’s silhouette, find it missing

from their corner vision slipstream, let them whisper:

‘fare ye well - old friend

may the breeze, be gentle

where you dwell’.

Just once, without weighty hesitation

and their solemn faces decorated

by a tugging wink - of a smirking lip

as-if, in quirky jest

or steadfast refusal to surrender

to a gravelly throat’s: stuttering tremor.

A-far-to-early and dramatically - inked testimony

for a grateful heart’s scaffolding companions

immortalising, their heroic deeds of firefighting

my lifetime of scorched landmarks

to cultivate a Phoenix’s ambition: for a harvest

of skyscraper dreams.

Gratefully, I now bequeath these smudged letters

of a parting’s serenade

whistling my tune, to a deathless wind:

‘fare ye well - loyal friends

till our eternally bonded masts

sail again’.

  • dusk arising

Encompassing a life of heroic duty, heartfelt care, disappointment and respect which all fall to being 'of the past' this reads as a coming to terms with the resting place of late years in our lives. And that which, for us all, shall follow.

Here is the result of a lifetimes teaching to lift one's mind in readied acceptance and wonder.

truly those who are by our sides in times of need, are heroic monuments to that driving force that keeps us striving: ever forward
thank you my friend, for yet another insightful and encouraging comment

    • Fay Slimm.

The sense of on-going time echoes from your well chosen phrasing and flows with ease from line to line as friends have to whisper a bon-homied goodbye to scaffold adventures - - - I admire every which way you use words so rich in poetic intrigue my friend.

thank you, all those redrafts are made worthwhile when someone of your talent galvanises my enthusiasm with such a generous comment

a poem of epic stance if not of proportion... well executed sir and God speed for a safe and eventual return.....

yes indeed, a fine piece of literature with a historical flavour all wrapped in a poem .. what more can we ask....

          you're too kind!
I find some older words have a more melodic aspect to their structure and hence work better at depicting the mood or tone of a poem

Very good words LB, may your Phoenix rise and become stronger and everlasting.

            Good write LB.
We may use 'fare well' to mean 'wish you well', not always meaning 'goodbye!'

exactly, thanks for highlighting the hopeful/positive tone I was aiming for
