The Direction of Time

daydreaming

I’m rushing to cut through the arctic wind
Winter slows down the landscape I see
I hear cars move slowly as pedestrians are crossing
The trees distract me with the branches that sway
Everything dances at the beat of the wind.

I know what it means when I feel this way
My present and future don’t seem to make sense
It's the past that becomes alive in my head
Reversing my thoughts it’s like hitting rewind
It is time to retrain my intransigent mind.

As I push hard to convince my brain
The direction of time is not always the same…
I remember old tears running down my face
While it was your laughter that made me forget
Every triumph, every failure I was quick to embrace.

This time I’ll dare to push a bit harder
If I’m able to tilt the past in my favor
I’ll construct a new setting, our lives will be perfect
I'll build a world with the power of a verse
We'll be at the center of our own Universe.

I’m inserting myself where I should have been
To enjoy countless moments that I know I missed
All the changes I’ll make will revolve around you
You will never be lonely, I promise you this
I will be by your side every step of the way.

And if I’m ever able to remove myself
From places I know I should have never been
I’ll remove myself from all my vices
I will never succumb to my own devices
This time I swear I won’t take any chances...

I’ve learned my lesson
And now I know
It is up to me
If you stay or go
There’re many things
I can't take back
Even if I could
Change the past
I’ll get nowhere
‘til the day comes
When I hear you say
“I forgive you, my love!

  • Comment from author about the poem: While in high school I read a book called "La Invención de Morel" by Alfonso Bioy Casares. If you read it you will understand this poem much better. It is an excellent novel. In this poem, I am imagining myself traveling back in time to insert or remove myself from situations that hurt a loved one. In doing so, I hope I can change my present and future for the better.

Thank you Andy. He is gone now. So I don’t know if he will ever forgive me. This is one of those things that will never be resolved in my lifetime. Thanks you for your comment.
