I Have Tried to Write an Epic

Steve Unruh

I have tried to write an epic

But an Epic doesn’t come,

I guess I have no words for one of these

My mind must be to narrow

To draw the thinking from.

And narrowness equates to mental freeze.

I’ve read some older masters

And admired their verbal couth,

And wish my thoughts ran on to longer things

But I only know one language

Only on tongue fills my mouth,

And so one song is all that I can sing.

Only one can be called native

That is where one speaks his best

All others learned will have an untrue note.

Since my voice doesn’t run to epic

I’ll use my pen for an inquest

…….Into a view of livings anecdote!

  • ANGELA & BRIAN

Angela here - Good Evening Steve ! Welcome to MPS it is a very PROACTIVE site & operates by reading & commenting on each others poems. Thanks for sharing your first Poem it is a dilemma many of us - quite often - find ourselves in. There are some Members (like FAY) who conjure up a very memorable ODE each day and others (like Brian & I) who struggle ! Please visit our site - Thanks !
Your Poem may not be an epic (in your mind) but it is elegantly penned with Consistent Meter which makes it very reciteable - the Hallmark of a good poem. There is also a discernable Rhyme Pattern - which is another Hallmark ! xab xab xcd xcd xef xef. My (Husband of 6 Months) & I are performance Poets. Poetry started in the Oral Tradition and in our estimation a poem must be RECITABLE and in that context - Yours really is an EPIC ! More Poems please ! WE live near LONDON (UK) What State of the USA do you live in ?

Blessings & Peace to You & Yours
    Love Angela & Brian ! !

Thanks for your kind words. I won't be on here very often, but glad I found the site! I do tend toward the classical rhyming style of writing.

I fantasized a number of epics as a teen poet. They are still in the back of my mind at 66! I love the classics, Beowulf, Homer, Dante, Milton, and many more less well-known. Modern ones that I return to over and over are Jason and Medea by John Gardner of "Grendel" fame, Kazantzakis's rich "The Odyssey, a Modern Sequel," Yeats' lyrical journey through the ages of man "The Wanderings of Oisin" and my favorite, Derek Walcott's wistful epic of the Caribbean "Omeros." These give me hope for my 70's! Don't abandon hope!

What have we left if we have no hope? I refuse to give it up! Though not of epics only.......I love the interplay a of words in all forms of writing.

It may not be an epic, very few of us write epics, but your words are very good.

        Welcome to MPS.
