First Snow

BlueHeron77

See the snow that seems to swirl up?

Floating, missing the ground,

Longing for back up there, where home is cold and comfortable.

It's resisting the warmth of the ground below.

Longing to linger alive by swirling, floating up

Away from its demise.

It fights the onslaught of downward lullabies,

Wooing it to sleep.

Pushing downwardly, cruelly even, fighting its

Gravitational inevitability for as long as it can.

It knows it's fighting a losing battle

For all first snow will finally sleep.

Swirling up it yet has a chance.

  • Comment from author about the poem: I thought about how swirling snow looks like it\\\'s fighting landing on the ground knowing it will never fly again. Then I thought how first snow will melt upon impact since it\\\'s still too warm. Then I wrote this poem. I called it Swirling Snow originally in my journal, and today I changed it to First Snow. I don\\\'t know which I like better. Snow seems a little like life once you\\\'re over the hoill some too.

Thank you very much for the comment and insights. I'm actually from Alabama (still have several things to update on my profile). We get far less snow than they do in SC, I'm sure. However, my family has lived in Montana and Indiana when I was younger, so we saw our fair share as well in those states. I'll submit more... thanks for the encouragement!

Those swirls of snow can give a great deal to the imagination which can create fine words like yours.

Thank you very much. I do enjoy writing poetry, I've just never really shared it anywhere. One of your poems showed up on my Google Discover Saturday, which led me to sign up here. Thanks for your writing and I enjoyed your poem about the steak!
